The Department of Philosophy and the Department of Classics at Washington University in St. Louis are pleased to announce that they will host the 34th Annual Workshop in Ancient Philosophy. The Workshop will fill Friday and Saturday, March 4-5, 2011, but all participants are especially invited to arrive early to attend the philosophy department's colloquium at 4:15 pm on Thursday, March 3. Professor Rachel Barney (University of Toronto) has kindly agreed to present the departmental colloquium and to give the keynote address at the workshop.

The program of the workshop is not thematically restricted.  We invite proposals on any figure, problem, or aspect of ancient philosophy.  The Workshop has a tradition of encouraging the presentation of work-in-progress by junior scholars.  Accordingly, while the initial evaluation of proposals will be based on blind reviewing, in constructing the program, preference may be given, ceteris paribus, to junior scholars.  Moreover, some consideration will be given to appropriate thematic clustering.

Respondents/commentators.  There will be respondents/commentators for most of the presentations at the Workshop.  Authors whose submitted proposals are not selected for presentation may be invited to serve as respondents/commentators. Those who would like to be considered as respondent/commentator only are also invited to contact the organizers (please provide a short description of your areas of interest).

Instructions for proposals.  Anyone who would like to present a paper is invited to submit an abstract for consideration by the Program Committee. To allow time for both response and discussion, papers should not exceed 35 minutes reading/presentation time (about 5000 words).  It will be assumed that the paper is close to its final form, within the indicated limits, when the proposal is submitted. However, only abstracts, of about 300-500 words, should be sent to the selection panel. These may be sent via e-mail, fax, or postal- or courier-service (address particulars below).  The author’s name, institutional address, e-mail address, and telephone and fax numbers should appear separately from the submitted abstract.  If sent via e-mail, attached abstracts and, in due course, papers should be transmitted only as PDF files.

Deadlines. Abstracts must be received by December 3, 2010 in order to be considered. The selection panel will notify proposers of its decisions within three weeks. Complete copies of the papers that have been accepted are to be provided as soon as possible thereafter, but in no event later than February 4, 2011. If you would like to participate as a respondent (whether or not you submit a proposal), please send us a note specifying your areas of primary interest also by December 3, 2010.

Information about arrangements for accommodations will be circulated in a subsequent message. There is no registration fee for the workshop.

We hope to see you here in March!

With best wishes,

Eric Brown
